Murder, Love & Redemption

Everyone knows how Manson girl Susan Atkins helped take lives. But few know the story of the life she helped save.

Whitehouse

In 1985, long after the crimes that would bind her forever to Charles Manson, Susan Atkins received a letter in the prison mail.

A young man named James Whitehouse had read her autobiography and wanted guidance. He was lost. He was frightened. He was partying too hard, hanging out with bad people. In her book, she wrote that she had found God and conquered her demons. How did she do it? How could he?

“He wrote to me and offered friendship,” the convicted murderer told parole officials years later, “and I was at a place emotionally where I thought maybe I could offer friendship back.”

The decision to correspond hadn’t been easy, she said. In the 14 years since her conviction, both as one of the despised Manson girls and a legend among born-again inmates, Atkins received more than her share of mail from crackpots. Occasionally, the exchanges turned disastrously romantic. One writer had to be barred from the prison; another, to whom she was briefly married, turned out to be a con man.

Now here was this confused 22-year-old wanting advice from her, a 37-year-old convict.

“I don’t remember what I told her,” Whitehouse recalls one recent afternoon, sitting on the porch of a San Juan Capistrano mobile home that doubles as his law office. “But I do remember what I prayed before I sent the letter. I said, ‘God, if this isn’t a good idea, then don’t let her get it.’ Later, she told me she hadn’t written back to anyone in about five years.”

What happened after he mailed that letter is a complicated tale. It’s a crime story, of course, framed by one of the most notorious murder sprees in California history. But it’s also an account of an uphill struggle against an increasingly stern and powerful justice system. And a love story. And a tragedy.

When Whitehouse tells it, though, it sounds improbably like a story of redemption, and not necessarily of the infamous prisoner who became his wife. For in the epilogue to one of the darkest tales ever to haunt the nation, Whitehouse—now a Harvard-educated attorney—found the courage to rewrite the story of his own life.

Forgive me for not thinking of Ms. Sharon Tate and her son who would have been in his 40's now like Whitmore except for the actions of Ms. Atkins. I also right now am thinking of the families of Steve Parent, Abagail Folger, and the others slaughtered that night by Ms. Atkins. Prisoners have too much assistance by people like Whitmore who should now help disabled military veterans. That would be a fitting tribute to Ms. Atkins if anyone thinks she deserves such commendation.

i wish susan atkins was still alive, i wanted to meet her
banone says:
As I said previously, I still feel that that Susan Atkins deserved to die in prison, because I feel that that it was only fair that that she die mostly alone, like her victims.

Your story really moved me! I was truly moved by your wife's book. I had a very similar rebirth as the one your wife had when being saved and delivered. God will always have his way. Listen carefully to the LORD so you will always know which direction to travel.

WOW! Thats a good read. i had the blessing of meeting james and susan in 2004. i too have recoverd fromy a dark seedy life and was a doer and maker of bad decissions...i have changed and i believe with all my heart that the woman i held hands and prayed with before we ate dinner had a heart aimed twords the betterment on herself and others. susan was a giver, i used to watch her and james and how they would laugh and be so content just holding hands... i could tell they were miles away from that prison when they were together. james i miss hanging with you..YOU my friend are an amazing man.. peace and love...AND GOOD ARTICLE OC

Good story, skillfully woven. Hope James is sorting things out.

Great story Shawn. Invokes many mixed emotions. Book/movie? Chris
CathyPrem says:
Susan also admitted to commiting incest with her son commiting fellatio on him at only months old to her inmate. It is in Helter Skelter. She was no doubt cruel beyond comprehension to Sharon. She was a sociopath. That being said, I believe she did the best she could to crawl of out the dark hole she walked in with Manson. Her husband seems like a nice man and loved her very much. I hope he can get on with his life and maybe have a family and wife out of bars.
Cher Roblin says:
There are so many sad reasons that Susan did what she did. Things were out of control for her when she was growing uup.

This was a very well written article. Thank you Shawn Hubler. James was Susan's "Prince" and she was his "Snow White". Their committment to one another reconfirm the meaning of the wedding vowels "Til Death Do Us Part". A truely awesome feeling that I am privileged to have been a part of...
donna raider says:
Susan had her chance for freedom when she turned state evidence. Then she turned around and jumped back on the Mason wagon...... When the state of California did away with the death penalty in 1972,had they just put a clause in there stating that all death penalty cases be commuted to life WITHOUT the possibility of parole. This would have save inmates heartache victims family worry and the state money. I know since then California has reinstated the death penalty. I know her husband and lawyer thought it was wrong for her not to get paroled because she had done everything by the guild lines. Well I disagree, she at least got her life, that is more then her victims got.
Doug says:
Just for those of you who say she killed Sharon Tate, Watson and Krewinkel both say she didn't but that Watson did, her knife didn't have any blood on it when found. She was there and guilty of that. And the comment about your going to die is clearly aimed at Susan herself in the Grand Jury Testimony. Not saying she was innocent, just that she didn't stab.
el superbrain says:
Susan Atkins (like Patricia and Leslie) was a victim as much as Sharon Tate. I loved to read this article and learn that she met this man that accompanied her. Some say “Let them rot”. I agree. But only when they are guilty. Now, what amount of guilt does a person has, who have been rob of a healthy transitiion process from Teen Age years into maturity and loaded with mind altering drugs and brain washed, in anything they do? Both women, Patricia and Leslie (like Susan) are the biggest victims of the Tate and Labianca murders. For their degree of guilt, four decades of prision is more than enough. They both should go free for the shake of reazon and justice. And yes, I have seen the pictures of the masacre and I have done my share of hating the killers and had wanted them to rot. But one thing is emotion and another is justice. There had been too much emotion in this case a not much justice. Patricia and Leslie should be paroled.(Please excuse my english.) el superbrain Puerto Rico USA youtube.com/elsuperbrain

Shawn: Amazing article, well written, captivating and accurate. This is the story that was never told, and clearly the truth behind the redemption of the human sprit. God Bless Susan and James. It was my honor to know them both. Orange Coast Magazine is enriched by having a talent like you on board. Thanks and Kudos.

I was blessed to have been graced with two lovely people in my life whom I can truly call "friends" James and Susan Whitehouse. Susan was my mentor as well and will forever live in my heart. James you have demonstrated yourself to be the man God wanted you to be, faithful and true. May your heart be strengthened and your steps led by HIm.
fairbrit says:
I'm an English woman, two years younger than Atkins, and remember well the events of this gruesome crime when I was just 17. Although I have every sympathy with Whitehouse who appears a good person, it is hard to swallow the fact that Atkins minimised her role in those murders. However, it is true that she wasn't the main henchwoman (Tex Watson was the uber-killer over those two nights of August 1969). Having said that, I believe when Atkins was dying she should have been given leniency to be with her husband as she served almost 4 decades behind bars and did show remorse. As far as the other people (Manson, Watson, Krenwinkel and Van Houten) I don't see them ever being released because their crimes have become iconic and symbolic of the death of the 1960s.
Friend says:
This is a wonderful story of just how Susan was on a daily basis, so many times she would put her hand out to me when I was in a deep dark place. Few people every get to know of the care and compassion she had for people, and she loved the God that forgave her of all her deeds. I personally know that she loved James with all her heart and soul. I will miss Susan, but us that knew her have James. We all love him too.

Hi james. I think this is a great story. I hope the movie people take note of what a great movie it would make. I will never forget how many times I went to both of you for advice in trying to sort out a problem we were having We all miss both of you two a lot. It was a great ride for you and sadie and my family will always have a soft spot in our hearts for both of you.
Janis says:
Jesus came to save sinners. Those who keep ranting about how she murdered so many people do not know that Jesus came to save sinners. Susan was forgiven not based on her good works but on the finished work of Christ. Many "good" people go to hell and "bad" go to Heaven.
Joe Johnson says:
When I heard about Susan dying of brain cancer, I was indifferent at best. The only impression I had of her was formed from the same old crime news from 40 years ago. When I came across the Susan Atkins website and other positive sources since that time, I completely changed my opinion. I was blown away. It made me re-think a lot of things. What a love story. How can it not touch your heart? God bless you James
Kay Stewart says:
I am a proud friend of James and Susan, two of the kindest, finest people I've ever known. He has worked tirelessly and often without pay to help the women at CIW in Corona. I've never known such love and caring and not just for Susan but for each of us who have loved ones in prison. If he could help he was there for us. The world would be a better place with more guys like him. He never said no when we asked for help. And, Susan was there 24/7 for her friends inside and out. Fate dealt her a lousy hand.
Laura says:
I too am a friend of Susan and James. The two deeply loved each other. Susan is dearly missed by those that had the distict please to know her. James is a wonderful man that tried his best to bring her home in the end, only to be denied. Now he can use his legal training to help others. I am proud to call James friend. Thank you James!
Laurie says:
I am sure that James has some very fond memories of his marriage to Susan. I am sure she had some good in her as she grew and matured. BUT, she killed Sharon Tate and her unborn baby. My mom actally new film director Robert Evans who was very good friends with Roman Polanski and my heart goes out to Roman still. may god always bless sharon, her baby and the other victums of such a unnecessary crime. If sharon was alive today she would be enjoying Roman, and being a wonderful, beautiful grandma I am sure, but the good ole manson family members took all that away and now there is nothing left! think about that instead.
Lola41 says:
Dedeworld....you need to research the murders a bit more. Susan did not stab Miss Folger. That would be Patricia Krenwinkle and Tex Watson. In fact, Susan did not stab Sharon. To my knowledge, she held her while Tex stabbed her. Tex scares me more than Manson. He stabbed all of the victims. Now, I think Susan chased Voytek out of the house and stabbed his legs, but, basically, Susan was all talk. She should have taken what the DA offered long ago an offer to be the State's witness, instead, she listened to Charlie and follwed his orders...she was out of her mind on drugs. Good for her husband. I am glad she had someone normal in her life and someone who loved her. I truly think she turned her life around in prison. I'm sorry it did not happen long ago before she met Charlie. From my research, she did not have a great life growing up. I hope that James can help others. I'm sure it would make Susan happy. God forgives.
Marietta Sala says:
To James, Thank you for sending me the article, had trouble with the print, so used a mag glass to read it. The article is very well written as it shows people the commitment of your relationship and how deep and real it was. It does prove also that an injustise was done. In any civilized society Susan should have been released on compassioned grounds. Hoping that the article will give people a new under= standing. It is also a very moving tribute to her. Thank you again for sharing it with me. Marietta.
Mary Beth says:
It truly astounds me how many people "find God" in prison and then try to use that to be released. Susan admitted stabbing Sharon and as Sharon cried for mercy Susan said she looked in her eyes and said"i have no mercy for you bitch!" Direct quote. Tell me why she should have been shown any mercy.
Melody says:
All anyone ever needs is just someone to believe in them... God Bless you James for all you have done and for all you still do. Melody
Michael says:
Great article. I feel very sorry for Susan. I believe she found redemption and was totally rehabilitated. She should have been released years ago. It is doubtful she actually killed anyone Tex Watson himself has said it was he who killed Sharon Tate. Dont get me wrong it was a horrible crime. But Susan, with a flawless prison record and full of genuine remorse, I believe could have become a valuable contributor to society. A beacon that you can turn your life around and be a symbol for good and turn your back on evil acts. Unfortunately because of the infamous nature of the crimes, and their cultural significance, no parole board had the guts to release her no matter how immaculate her prison record was or no matter the genuine remorse shown. You have my deepest sympathy James.
Mother Connie says:
Wonderful article. I have known James and Susan for all the years of their marriage, and I can attest to the truth and beauty of the whole story. As a society we talk redemption, but we don't practice it. God bless James. Susan is living in her blessing now. Thank you for an uplifting piece of writing.
Nikki says:
I new Susan for a time in the 80's. I saw a little of her struggle between "This is all there is for me(prison)" to "How do I find a way to make positive value out of this life?" My friend Rita informed me of her illness, she and James' struggle to get her home, and then her death. It was barely mentioned in print even tho the Manson killings would pop up everywhere from TV to science fiction novels. Hopefully, this article helps to bring some peace to all of the people effected by a more than 30 year old tragedy.
Ondine says:
I don't understand why anyone thinks she should ever be released from prison. Her death sentence was commuted to life in prison w/out parole. So that is the sentence that she must serve. For once justice was done and a full sentence served, her life spent in prison in punishment for murder. I wish that murderers and all criminal defendants were made to serve their full sentences. We would all be so much safer.
Rachael says:
A lovely sensitive bit of writing. Judge no book by it's cover, both Whitehouses are, or in Susans case were, remarkable people. For once less bias - good one OC.
Rachael says:
Dedeworld you have your facts 100 percent wrong. It was Pat Krenwinkel that killed Abigail and to whom her last words were addressed.
Renee' Bayes says:
Wow!! All I can say is that its about time the other side of her story is told. The public is bombarded with the bad memories, but the redemption is never told. And the public may never forgive her in their hearts, but God has. That's all that matters I suppose. My father is her cousin, I guess that makes me a cousin too. My grandmother wrote her in prison when she was first arrested. She pleaded with her to give her life to Jesus and ask for forgiveness. Years later I had the privilege to write her and James and continue my family contact. We wanted her to know "this" side of the family still thought of her and loved her. James told me she clutched the letter and cried. Once again I want to say that I am thrilled to read something positive about Susan and James. May God continue to bless James and I know Susan is free at last up in heaven with her savior!
Rhonda says:
A very moving article. I believe Susan is in heaven with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She is finally free. And God bless Mr. Whitehouse.
Richard Barnes says:
I met Susan in early 1994, and along with my wife, made it a point to visit with her in prison, at least 3 times a year, until she became ill. Those who didn't know her, will I suppose remain sceptical of what's been writen here about her. But both Susan and James were a remarkable couple. They exhibited an extraordinary dedication to each other, which was so obvious to anyone who spent time around them. It's hard to believe Susan's gone. We miss her a lot.
Rita Roth says:
Indeed a suprise to read an accound of how things really were.....I was at CIW with Susan and remember when James first wrote to her and she worried over answering him for fear of being used by jet another self-serving attention seeker.....she was my friend, she lived what she believed and did some very good things for others...Jsmes was good for and to her and I thank God that they found each other...great article glad to see some of her accomplishments in print....
rita says:
    she was beautifull
Sandra Davis Lawrence says:
I would be remissed not to comment. What a rich, loving life you both lived. I know, I was there and saw with my own eyes and heart the love you had for each other. If we all were so lucky-what a beautiful world this would be. May God continue to bless and keep you James. It is wonderful to call you friend! With love and respect, Sandra
Shawn says:
About 10 years ago i stumbled upon the Manson case as a teenager, and ended up reading everything I could on the subject, including memoirs and stories about the defendants' involvement in the crimes, the history and evolution of the family, probably most of the published words about it all, if i may say. My personal conviction and belief is that she was quite different in many ways than her co-defendants, that Mr. Bugliosi and none of the legal authorities really fought to understand the real motive and events that led to the crimes at the time, that she should've been the star witness instead of Mrs.Kasabian because of her longer experience as a member of the family, and that the society at large failed to acknowledge the change in her in her later years and never really understood her. I sincerely believe she was a very special person, and her 1978 book Child of Satan Child of God really inspired me and deeply touched me, i think i've read it 3 times over the past 10 years. I also believe James Whitehouse is a great man, and it is somewhat relieving to me to know that they were lovers and friends in her later years, that she found love and friendship she so much seeked with her surprising energy and will in another soul before she passed away. May God rest her soul in peace. I believe her story will stay with me throughout my years, it certainly did during my teens and 20s. It is extremely sad and inspiring at the same time. Thank you very much for sharing this with us.
Steve Whitmore says:
A great piece. Moving, compelling and fresh. I had no idea about this relationship. I could've read about this for another 1,000 words. Good job, Shawn.
SuzieF says:
I have been following the Manson story off and on for years. "Child of Satan, Chld of God" played a huge role in the beginnings of my walk with God. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article and was glad I found the Susan Atkins site that lead me to this. I am very encouraged now once again. Thank you!

Terry says:
I have always thought Susan was the worst of the bunch. I just read her story on this site. Don't know what to believe but would like to believe her. I have always beeen sick at the thought of Sharon Tate's murder. Mostly because it was so heinous. If what she says is true, though still awful, it's sad and unfair she was never given parole. I commend her for what she's accomplished while in prison. It seems she's impressed alot of influential people so I have to believe she truly turned her life around! She certainly turned you around! Good luck in your future endeavors and congrats on getting to go to Harvard. That was my dream but wasn't meant to be.
Theresa Cruz says:
I always use to say that Susan Atkins should be released just based on her relationship. The quality time they spent communicating is something most couples don't do. The Love and the power that relationship had was something you don't see. James, your one in a million and you were probably one of the best husbands at CIW. You were blessed but Susan got a big blessing also. You gave her, love hope and faith and that is something money can not buy.
Tony R. says:
I just watched a 2 hour special on the Mansion family and murders. Susan Atkins deserved to die in prison. What she and the other members did was unforgiveable and these people should never get out of prison alive (the remaining members). It doesn't matter how Susan turned her life around in prison and all the good she did does NOT change the fact that she particapated in 7 grizzly senseless murders.
Tony says:
Excellent article Shawn! Thank you! Yes, James and Susan are wonderful people. We are blessed to have them as friends. They are an example and an inspiration. God bless them for all that they have done and for all that James continues to do!
Tony says:
I know Susan Atkins was young (21) at the time of the murders, but just her being involved is enough for the punishment she received. Even if Susan didn't stab Sharon Tate but her presence there and the fact that she HELD Tate while Watson did the brutal stabbing says enough of her guilt. I've seen the crime scene photos of both nights and they are horrible sensless acts on innocent human beings.
